Historically the section between Wimbledon and Raynes Park was served by route 77A (now route 87 and much shorter) and the Morden to Raynes Park section was, until 1969, covered by route 118. Route 156 itself had only come about in 1983, replacing part of the 77A and all of the M1. It was introduced to cover a withdrawn section of route 156 between Morden and Wimbledon serving the same roads as now. The route number was unused for 17 years and in 1987 the route we know today was created. However, the only bus to Parliament Hill Fields from the west end today is the C2 via Oxford Street, so that link was lost. In 1970 it was withdrawn, and most of the connections it made are pretty achievable today using other services. It was further extended to Parliament Hill Fields via Trafalgar Square, Charing Cross Road and Camden Town in 1965. Route 53 still pretty much serves those points from end to end today taking a rather more direct route. This was from Plumstead to Victoria Embankment via Woolwich, Greenwich, New Cross, Peckham, Camberwell, Kennington and Westminster.

It was formed as part of the tram replacement scheme in 1952, covering the former route of tram 40. The first time the number 163 was used for a London Bus route it had nothing to do with the route we have today.
